Chapter 4 - The Broken Alliance

The next morning,
the sun rose over the estate,
but it brought no warmth to the cold hearts inside.
Lady Eleanor called for an emergency family meeting in the grand dining room,
demanding that Clara attend without Elena.
Clara walked in proudly,
her head held high,
refusing to show any weakness to her new in-laws.
"We must discuss the terms of your marriage,"
Lady Eleanor started,
her voice cold as ice,
"this maid cannot remain in this house."
"She is not a maid,
she is my sister,"
Clara retorted,
slamming her hands onto the long dining table.
Julian feigned sympathy,
stepping close to Clara,
placing a deceptive hand on her shoulder.
"Darling,
we understand your emotion,"
Julian lied smoothly,
"but society is already talking,
and our stocks are dropping."
"I do not care about your stocks,"
Clara snapped,
shaking off his hand with disgust.
Lord Blackstone spoke up,
his voice deep and threatening,
"Your father signed a contract,
Clara,
and your inheritance is tied to this family."
Clara laughed bitterly,
realizing the true nature of the marriage she had walked into.
"You did not marry me for love,"
she stated,
"you married me for my family's money."
Lady Eleanor smiled cruelly,
"Love is for peasants,
my dear,
and right now,
your sister is a liability."
They threatened to cut off all funding to Clara's parents' charity if she did not send Elena away.
Clara felt trapped,
the walls of the mansion closing in on her,
as she realized the depth of their cruelty.
She needed a plan,
and she needed to find out why the Blackstones were so terrified of Elena.
She left the room without another word,
determined to uncover the truth,
no matter the cost.
She hurried back to the guest room,
only to find the door wide open,
and the room completely empty.

Elena was gone,
leaving behind only the silver locket on the unmade bed.
