Chapter 12
A heavy silence fell over the kitchen,
broken only by the soft ticking of the old wall clock.
Evelyn looked at her daughter,
heart aching at the choice that now lay before them.
They had spent five years building a life free from the toxicity of that family,
free from their judgment.
"We do not need their money,"
Evelyn said firmly,
her voice carrying the weight of five years of hard work.
"We have everything we need right here,
built with our own hands and our own love."
The lawyer nodded understandingly,
surprising them both with a look of genuine sympathy.

"I understand completely,
madam,
as I have seen what that family does to people."
"But the old man genuinely regrets his actions,
and this is his only way of attempting to right his wrongs."
He pushed the documents slightly closer to Sophie,
leaving the ultimate decision to the young girl.
"The choice is entirely yours,
Miss Sophie,
and no one can force you to step foot in that house again."

Sophie stared at the papers,
her mind racing back to the cold nights when she felt completely worthless.
