Chapter 15

The journey to the city was long,

the scenery slowly changing from open green fields to gray concrete structures.

The air grew thick with smog,

the bright blue sky replaced by a heavy,

oppressive blanket of overcast clouds.

Sophie watched through the window,

noticing how close together the buildings were,

yet how distant the people looked.

No one smiled at each other on the streets,

everyone moved with a frantic,

joyless urgency.

Evelyn held Sophie's hand tightly,

feeling the familiar anxiety of the city trying to creep back into her chest.

But she looked at Sophie,

who was completely calm,

watching the world pass by with cool curiosity.

They were no longer the broken,

desperate souls who had fled this place in the dead of night.

They were visitors now,

untouchable by the coldness of the environment around them.

As the car finally turned into the wealthy district,

the massive iron gates of the estate loomed ahead.

The gates opened slowly,

May you like

screeching like an old monster waking from a long,

dark sleep.
