Chapter 9

The next morning brought a heavy frost,

coating the garden in a layer of sparkling white crystals.

Evelyn sat by the window,

the cup of hot tea warming her hands,

though her mind remained entirely cold.

She watched Sophie walk out to the garden,

wrapped tightly in a thick woolen coat that they had bought together.

The young girl was checking on the roots of her favorite plants,

ensuring they would survive the harsh winter ahead.

Sophie possessed a quiet resilience now,

a strength that had been forged in the fire of their abandonment.

Evelyn wondered if bringing the past back into their lives would shatter that strength,

or if it would only prove how much they had grown.

Suddenly,

the quiet stillness of the morning was shattered by a sound they rarely heard.

A sleek,

luxurious black car turned onto their narrow dirt road,

its engine purring like a mechanical beast.

It looked completely out of place against the backdrop of modest cottages,

open fields,

and simple wooden fences.

The vehicle came to a slow stop right outside their garden gate,

its polished surface reflecting the pale morning sun.

Sophie stopped her work,

May you like

standing tall,

her gaze fixed on the mysterious visitor.
