Chapter 20

Evelyn stepped in front of her daughter,

her eyes flashing with a dangerous,

unyielding fire that silenced the room.

She did not raise her voice,

but the absolute authority in her tone made Victoria take a step back.

"We are not charity cases,

and we are certainly not your family,"

Evelyn said,

each word sharp as glass.

"We left this house with nothing,

and we built a life that you could never dream of understan

ding."

"Look at yourselves,

standing over a dying man,

fighting like animals over pieces of paper and gold."

"You think you are superior because of this mansion,

but you are poorer than anyone I have ever met."

The relatives stared at her,

shocked by the fierce dignity of the woman they had once looked down upon.

Sophie stepped out from behind her mother,

looking at the angry crowd with calm,

unbothered eyes.

She looked at Victoria,

then at the others,

and realized her mother was completely right.

poisoned by their own greed.
