Chapter 10
The night was peaceful,
the only sound being the wind rustling through the ancient oaks outside the bedroom window.
Khloe slept soundly,
her breathing deep and even,
unbothered by the nightmares that had plagued her in the hospital.
Marcus lay awake beside her,
staring at the ceiling,
his mind processing the shift in his life.
He had always believed that weakness came from caring,

that emotional attachment was a liability in his line of work.
But looking at the woman beside him,
he realized that his desire to protect her gave him a different kind of strength.
It wasn't based on fear or dominance,
but on a profound sense of purpose.
He carefully rolled onto his side,
watching the shadows play across her face,
admiring her resilience.
She had endured so much,
yet she remained kind,
her spirit unbroken by the malice she had encountered.
He reached out,
very gently twirling a strand of her dark hair around his finger.
She stirred slightly at his touch,
murmuring something in her sleep,
moving closer to his warmth.
Marcus didn't pull away,
instead allowing her to rest her head against his chest,
his arm wrapping securely around her waist.
It was an intimacy he had never allowed himself to experience before,
a letting down of his guard that felt both terrifying and liberating.
The hours ticked away,
the darkness slowly giving way to the soft grays of early morning.
When Khloe finally opened her eyes,
she found him looking down at her,
his expression softer than she had ever seen it.
"Good morning,"
she whispered,
her voice thick with sleep.
"Good morning,"
he replied,
his voice low and rumbling against her ear.
"How are you feeling?"
"Better,"
she said,
smiling as she realized how close they were.
"Much better."
She didn't try to pull away,
and neither did he,
the unspoken bond between them strengthening in the quiet dawn.
The world outside was still filled with complications,
but inside this room,

they had found a strange,
beautiful peace.
Marcus knew the legal battle with Isabella would culminate soon,
but he felt entirely prepared to face it,
knowing what he had to come home to.

He helped her sit up,
preparing to take her to see the nursery as he had promised the night before.
