Chapter 9

The massive gates of the Thorne estate swung open,

allowing the black sedan to glide smoothly up the long,

winding driveway.

Khloe looked out the window,

watching the familiar landscape roll past,

feeling an odd mixture of relief and anxiety.

The last time she had left this house,

she had been running for her life,

terrified and alone.

Now,

she was returning under the protective gaze of the most powerful man in the city.

Marcus parked the car in front of the grand entrance,

instantly jumping out to open her door.

He didn’t wait for her to struggle out,

instead leaning in and lifting her gently into his arms.

"Marcus,

I can walk,"

she protested softly,

flushing as the household staff stood in a neat line near the door.

"The doctor said no unnecessary exertion,"

he reminded her,

his tone leaving absolutely no room for argument.

He carried her through the grand foyer,

past the towering marble columns,

and up the sweeping staircase.

The house felt different now,

warmer,

as if the cold corporate atmosphere had been intentionally purged.

He brought her to the master suite,

where a fire was crackling softly in the hearth,

casting a cozy glow over the room.

He lowered her onto the bed,

arranging the plush pillows behind her back with meticulous care.

"Thank you,"

she whispered,

looking around the beautiful space,

feeling a deep sense of security wash over her.

"This is your home now,

Khloe,"

Marcus said,

standing at the edge of the bed,

looking down at her.

"Truly your home."

The staff brought up a tray of warm food,

the aroma filling the room and making her realize how hungry she actually was.

Marcus sat in the chair beside her,

watching her eat,

his expression unreadable but relaxed.

For the first time in months,

there was no immediate crisis,

no impending danger looming over their heads.

"The nursery is completed,"

Marcus mentioned quietly,

breaking the silence.

"I had them use the colors you suggested before...

before everything happened."

Khloe paused,

her heart swelling with a warmth she hadn't expected to feel toward him.

"Can I see it?"

she asked,

her eyes shining with anticipation.

"Tomorrow,"

he promised,

smiling faintly.

"Tonight,

you rest."

She nodded,

accepting his care,

May you like

realizing that the contract that had originally bound them together was fading away,

replaced by something much more real.
