Chapter 14

The minutes felt like agonizing hours,

each tick of the clock a brutal reminder of how fragile life could be.

But slowly,

the frantic movements of the medical team began to slow down,

and the tense atmosphere in the room started to dissipate.

Dr. Cole finally stepped away from the incubator,

wiping a layer of sweat from his forehead before walking out to meet them.

"The procedure was completely successful,"

the doctor announced,

a tired but genuine smile appearing on his face.

"His oxygen levels are already normalizing,

and his lungs are expanding beautifully."

Khloe let out a long,

shuddering breath,

her body going completely limp against Marcus's chest.

Marcus caught her,

lifting her up slightly,

feeling a wave of profound relief wash over his own soul.

"Thank God,"

Khloe whispered,

her tears turning from terror to immense gratitude.

"Can we see him closely?"

Marcus asked,

his voice unusually rough,

his hand rubbing Khloe's back to soothe her remaining tremors.

"Yes,

but only one at a time,

and you must be extremely quiet,"

Dr. Cole replied,

opening the heavy door to the secure unit.

Marcus looked down at Khloe,

nodding gently toward the door.

"Go ahead,"

he said softly,

"he needs his mother right now."

Khloe walked in slowly,

her steps hesitant but filled with a deep,

maternal longing.

She approached the incubator,

reaching through the small openings to touch her son's tiny foot.

Marcus watched her through the glass,

feeling a strange,

unfamiliar warmth blooming in his chest.

He had never known love like this,

a love that was so painful,

so terrifying,

yet so absolutely necessary.

He realized then that he didn’t just want to protect them out of obligation or duty;

he loved them with every fiber of his being.

He loved this resilient woman who had brought light into his dark,

cynical world,

and he loved the little boy who was fighting so hard to stay in it.

He leaned his forehead against the cool glass,

silently making a vow to the universe.

He would change,

he would be better,

and he would spend the rest of his days ensuring they had everything they ever needed.
