Chapter 1 - Cold Marble, Colder Heart

|
At eight months pregnant, the marble corridors of the county family court felt vast, sterile, and entirely unfeeling. The dull echo of hurried shoes and distant whispers bounced off the high walls, creating a heavy hum of human misery. Every step I took required deliberate focus. One hand cupped the heavy swell of my abdomen, while the other tightly gripped a faded manila folder containing the few scraps of proof I had managed to salvage—medical bills, printed text messages, and bank statements showing accounts wiped clean.
My unborn daughter kicked sharply beneath my ribs, a gentle reminder that despite the exhaustion consuming my body, I was no longer fighting only for myself.
"Take it easy, ma'am," the security officer at the metal detector said softly, noticing the way I swayed after stepping through the scanner. "There's a bench right over there."
"Thank you," I murmured, offering a frail smile. "I just need to make it to Courtroom 304."
I declined the chair because sitting down had become almost as painful as standing. My lower back throbbed with a persistent, dull ache that had plagued me for weeks, exacerbated by nights spent sleeping on borrowed couches and cheap motel mattresses.
Divorce was the word I repeated silently like a mantra as I walked.
Divorce, not betrayal.
Divorce, not financial starvation.
Divorce, not the slow, calculated isolation that had stripped away my career, my friends, and my self-worth over six years of marriage.
I had married Adrian Caldwell believing he was the man he presented to the world: a visionary CEO, a charismatic leader of Lumina Grid, and a philanthropist who donated generously to women's shelters with photo crews in tow. To the public, Adrian was a self-made titan of green energy technology. At home, humanity was simply an overhead expense he could no longer justify.
When the heavy wooden doors of Courtroom 304 swung open, Adrian walked in. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that fit his lean frame perfectly. His dark hair was meticulously styled, and his expression was completely relaxed, as if he were attending a routine board meeting rather than legally dismantling our life together.

Beside him walked his attorney, Graham Pike, a ruthless litigator notorious for leaving opposing spouses financially bankrupt.
And on Adrian’s arm was Bianca Shaw.
