Chapter 6 - A Brother's Recusal

Judge Rowan stepped down from the elevated bench, moving quickly toward where I sat slumped against the wooden bench. He stopped a few feet away, restraining himself with visible difficulty, remembering the strict judicial protocol governing his role.
"Mrs. Caldwell," he said, his voice trembling slightly. "Are you in immediate physical distress? Do you require a stretcher?"
"I... I think my back is spasming," I choked out, wiping a streak of blood from my chin. "The baby... she’s kicking very hard."
"Medical personnel are on their way," Ben said softly, his official tone dropping for a brief second to reveal the protective older brother who had raised me after our father died.
Adrian stepped between us, trying to reassert control.
"Your Honor, with all due respect, this is an extreme overreaction," Adrian said coldly. "My wife has a history of dramatic episodes. You are showing extreme bias here."
Ben slowly turned his full attention to my husband. The air in the room grew dangerously cold.
"Mr. Caldwell," Ben said softly. "Before any further statements are entered into the record, I must make a formal judicial disclosure."
Graham Pike frowned, sensing a trap. "A disclosure, Your Honor?"
"Yes," Ben said, looking directly into Adrian’s eyes. "Mrs. Lydia Caldwell is my younger sister."
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Adrian’s face drained of all color. He staggered back a half-step, staring at the judge in utter disbelief.
"Your... your sister?" Adrian stuttered, his suave facade crumbling completely. "That's impossible. She told me... she said her family was gone."
"No, Adrian," I whispered from the floor, meeting his horrified gaze. "You told me my family was gone. You blocked his calls. You deleted his emails. You convinced me he hated me so I would have no one left to run to."

Ben closed his eyes briefly, inhaling a sharp, ragged breath to master his emotion. When he opened them, he was once again the stern officer of the court.
"Because of my familial relationship with the plaintiff, I am legally required to recuse myself from presiding over the divorce and property division," Ben announced clearly. "However, as a presiding judicial officer who witnessed a felony assault in this building, I am securing this room and holding all parties until Supervising Judge Amelia Warren arrives to assume control."
