Chapter 50 - The False Surrender

The next forty-eight hours were a blur of meticulous, paranoid preparation. Clara’s first birthday was exactly three days away, and the clock was ticking down like a hammer in my skull.
I sat at the heavy oak dining table of the chateau, drafting an email on a highly encrypted, untraceable terminal. I was writing directly to the Council of the Seven Spheres, using a routing address we had extracted from the quantum server.
"Are you sure about this, Lydia?" Ben asked, watching over my shoulder as my fingers hovered over the keyboard.
"It's the only way to get inside the central chamber without fighting through an army," I replied, my voice steady despite the dread pooling in my stomach.
I hit send.
The message was simple: I concede. The Vanguard is dead, and my resources are depleted. I will bring Clara to the Louvre at midnight on her birthday. I only ask for a seat at the table in return.
It was a total lie, a desperate gambit to lower their guard. We had no intention of bringing Clara anywhere near the Louvre. We were going to leave her here, at the chateau, heavily guarded by Elias and his men, while Ben and I walked into the lion's den strapped with enough explosives to level a city block.
Ten minutes later, the terminal chimed. A reply had arrived.
I opened the message. It was a single digital ticket, bearing the Phoenix crest, and a short message:
Wisdom prevails, Lydia. Bring the child. Do not disappoint us.
"We have the invitation," I said, leaning back in my chair and exhaling a shaky breath.

"Now comes the hard part," Ben said, walking over to the weapon crates Elias had smuggled into the country. He pulled out two sleek, custom-fitted tactical vests designed to be worn under formal evening wear. "We have to figure out how to bypass their weapon scanners, kill the Council, and make it out alive."
I looked at the black Kevlar vest. "We don't need to make it out alive, Ben. We just need to make sure they never come for Clara again."
