Chapter 21 - The Shadow on the Bassinet

The hum of the hospital monitor felt impossibly loud in the sudden silence of the room. Outside, the morning sun was bathing the city skyline in a warm gold, but the air inside my chest felt icy cold.
I stared at the glowing screen of my phone. The encrypted text message burned into my retinas: Your husband owed us twenty million dollars—and in our business, debts don't disappear just because a marriage ends.
My fingers trembled against the glass. Ben must have noticed the sudden shift in my posture because he set his coffee down on the nightstand and stepped closer, his eyes narrowing in concern.
"Lydia?" Ben asked, laying a gentle hand on my shoulder. "What is it? You look like you've seen a ghost."
I didn't answer right away. I pulled Clara closer to my chest, my protective instincts flaring into a fierce, blinding heat. Her tiny body was so light, her breathing so soft against my collarbone. I handed the phone to Ben without a word.
Ben’s face drained of color as he scanned the text. His jaw clenched so tightly that a muscle jumped in his cheek.
Tessa Morgan, who had been setting the yellow roses near the window, frowned and took a step toward us. "What happened? Did Adrian try to call from holding?"
"No," Ben said, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with dark realization. "It's not Adrian. Adrian was just a puppet."
Tessa picked up the phone from Ben's hand. She read the message twice, her sharp legal mind processing the threat in real-time.
"Vanguard Apex," Tessa whispered, looking up at me with grave eyes. "Adrian didn't just embezzle from your family's estate, Lydia. He was laundering money for an offshore syndicate. When you froze his accounts during the divorce proceedings, you didn't just ruin him—you locked up their capital."

"I don't have twenty million dollars, Tessa," I choked out, a tear finally slipping down my cheek. "I have my mother's house and the remaining trust funds. That money is supposed to raise Clara!"
"They don't care about your family's trust, Lydia," Ben said, turning toward the window and sweeping the street below with a sharp, vigilant gaze. "They care about the twenty million Adrian promised them. And now that Adrian is going to federal prison... they're coming to collect from his widow."
