Chapter 46 - The Ghost in the Machine

|
Midnight draped Paris in a cold, unforgiving rain. The city of lights was deceptively quiet as Ben and I slipped down into the damp, echoing darkness of the abandoned subway tunnels beneath the 11th arrondissement.
We wore sleek, black tactical gear, equipped with night-vision goggles and suppressed weapons. The air smelled of mildew, ancient stone, and ozone.
"Signal is getting stronger," Ben whispered, checking the handheld tracker Natalie had programmed for us. "The data node is directly ahead, roughly two hundred meters down this service tunnel."
We moved in total silence, hugging the shadows of the rusted tracks. As we rounded a sharp curve, a faint, unnatural blue light illuminated the tunnel ahead.
We pressed our backs against the cold, damp wall. Peeking around the edge, I saw it.
It wasn't a standard server farm. It was a massive, free-standing quantum processor, humming with immense, terrifying power. It was hooked into the city's main subterranean fiber-optic cables. Standing guard around the machine were four figures dressed in entirely black, featureless tactical armor, their faces obscured by mirrored visors.
"Elite Sphere operatives," I murmured over our private comms. "They don't carry standard firearms. Look at their weapons."
Ben adjusted his night vision. The guards were holding sleek, magnetic-pulse rifles. "If they hit us with those, it won't just stop our hearts, it will fry all our electronics. We need to hit them fast and hard."
"I'll take the two on the left. You take the right," I commanded. "On my mark. Three... two... one. Mark!"
We stepped out from cover simultaneously. I raised my suppressed pistol, firing two rapid, perfectly aimed shots. The armor-piercing rounds shattered the mirrored visors of the guards on the left, dropping them instantly before they even realized they were under attack.

Ben’s rifle coughed twice, taking down the third guard. But the fourth operative was impossibly fast. He dove behind the quantum processor, raising his pulse rifle and firing a blinding, localized EMP blast.
The shockwave hit us like a physical wall, completely frying our night-vision goggles and plunging the tunnel into absolute darkness.
