Chapter 8 - Sound of a Heartbeat

|
The room fell quiet as the paramedic adjusted the gel probe on my stomach. Suddenly, a sound filled the silent courtroom through the monitor's speaker.
Thump-thump-thump-thump-thump.
It was fast, strong, and loud—the rapid, rhythmic sound of my unborn baby girl’s heart beating.
The sound echoed off the high mahogany panels, cutting through the toxic atmosphere of lies, greed, and legal maneuvering.
I closed my eyes, a single tear slipping down my cheek. For eight long months, I had carried this little life in isolation, terrified that Adrian’s endless mental cruelty would leave her with nothing. But hearing her heart echo through this courtroom made something inside me snap into place. I wasn't afraid anymore.
Adrian stared at the monitor machine, his mouth slightly open. For six years, he had treated our struggle to conceive as a inconvenience, and later, treated this pregnancy as an obstacle to his corporate ambitions. Hearing her heartbeat in front of a room full of officers of the law rendered his lies completely naked.
Judge Warren listened to the steady rhythm for a long moment before turning her gaze back to Adrian.
"Mr. Caldwell," Judge Warren said, her voice dropping an octave. "Your filings list this child as an 'anticipated financial liability.' Yet, I am looking at evidence that you intentionally locked your pregnant wife out of her home, cut off her access to funds, and used a falsified document to strip her of medical coverage."
"She abandoned the property!" Adrian insisted, his voice rising in desperation. "She left voluntarily!"
"Mr. Caldwell, I have reviewed the text messages submitted by Mrs. Caldwell," Judge Warren replied, holding up printed pages from my folder. "In a message dated last Tuesday, you wrote: 'If you don't sign the waiver, I will cancel your health insurance before you go into labor. Fear makes people reasonable.'"
A collective gasp rippled through the gallery.
Graham Pike buried his face in his hands, realizing his client had committed legal suicide.

"Did you write that message, Mr. Caldwell?" Judge Warren asked.
Adrian opened his mouth, but no sound came out. His face was pale, beads of sweat glistening on his forehead.
