Chapter 24 - The Ghost in the Glass

The screen flickered to life, showing a dimly lit room with floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking a dark ocean harbor.
A woman sat behind a heavy mahogany desk. She was elegantly dressed in a charcoal-grey silk suit, her silver hair pulled back into a flawless bun. She looked like a high-society grandmother, except for her eyes—cold, steel-grey, and devoid of any human warmth.
"Good evening, Lydia," the woman spoke into the camera. Her voice was smooth, cultured, and chillingly calm. "My name is Julianna Vance. No relation to your protective brother Ben, I assure you. Though the coincidence is amusing."
Ben leaned closer to the screen, his fingers digging into the edge of the mahogany table.
"Your late mother, Clara Sterling, was a very clever woman," Julianna continued, picking up a gold fountain pen and twirling it between her fingers. "She understood that real power operates in the shadows. What she never told you, Lydia, was that your father didn't lose the family empire in a bad stock trade. He lost it to us."
I gasped, gripping Ben's arm for support. "What is she talking about?"
"Adrian was not a random fortune-hunter who stumbled into your life," Julianna said with a faint, chilling smile. "We placed Adrian in your firm six years ago. His entire marriage to you was an assignment—to locate the Sterling ledger and extract the twenty million your family owed our firm from thirty years past."
Tears of utter betrayal stung my eyes. Every memory of my marriage—every anniversary, every shared smile, every promise Adrian had ever made—was a calculated lie orchestrated by a shadow syndicate.

"Adrian failed," Julianna stated flatly, setting the pen down. "He got greedy, he got sloppy, and he allowed himself to be arrested by petty municipal authorities. But the debt remains. You have seven days, Lydia. Bring the Sterling ledger to the harbor terminal, or we will collect the principal... starting with tiny Clara."
The screen went black.
