Chapter 30 - The Unseen Horizon

|

That evening, after the guests had gone and the house settled into a quiet, peaceful stillness, I sat in the nursery rocking chair, gently swaying Clara to sleep.

The warm summer breeze drifted through the open window, carrying the scent of yellow roses from the garden below.

Ben knocked softly on the doorframe, leaning in with a gentle smile. "She sleeping?"

"Almost," I whispered, smiling down at Clara's soft, rhythmic breathing.

Ben walked over and set a small, sealed envelope on the side table. "This just arrived in the evening mail. It's from the probate court in London."

I frowned slightly, carefully shifting Clara into her bassinet before picking up the envelope. "London? The Sterling estate matters were settled weeks ago."

"Open it," Ben said softly.

I broke the wax seal and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment paper.

The letter was written in dark blue ink, in an elegant, sweeping script I didn't recognize.

Dear Lydia Sterling,

Congratulations on surviving the fall of Vanguard Apex. You have proven yourself to be your father's true daughter—fierce, brilliant, and unyielding.

Julianna Vance was merely a regional director of our global network. The Sterling Sovereign Trust you recovered from your mother's painting holds the primary key to the European Apex Reserve in Geneva—a foundation valued at over eight hundred million dollars.

Your father left clear instructions: when you were ready, you were to assume your seat on the International Board.

A private aircraft is waiting for you at Logan International Airport. The choice is yours, Lydia. You can remain a quiet mother in Phoenix... or you can step into the light and claim your true throne.

With highest regards,

Lord Alistair Sterling

My breath caught in my throat. I stared at the signature at the bottom of the page, my mind spinning with a thousand new questions.

Lord Alistair Sterling. My father's older brother—a man my mother had told me had died forty years ago.

Ben looked at the letter, then at me, his expression turning serious yet fiercely supportive. "What do you want to do, Lyd?"

I looked down at tiny Clara sleeping peacefully in her bassinet, then out the window at the endless starry sky stretching over the city.

A quiet, dangerous, and thrilled smile slowly spread across my lips.

The courtroom doors had closed on Adrian Caldwell and Julianna Vance.

But out there in the vast, wide world, a grander horizon was calling my name.

I turned to Ben, my voice steady, clear, and ready for whatever came next.

"Pack our bags, Ben," I said softly. "We're going to London."
