Chapter 41 - The Phoenix Crest

|

The golden ink shimmered in the afternoon sun, a mocking testament to the peace I thought we had finally secured. The Council of the Seven Spheres. The words tasted like ash in my mouth. I slowly folded the heavy parchment, my knuckles turning white as I gripped the edges. The world around me—the laughing children in Kensington Gardens, the rustling autumn leaves, the warm cup of tea—suddenly felt like a fragile glass illusion waiting to be shattered.

"Lydia?" Ben's voice cut through the ringing in my ears.

He walked over from the stone path, slipping his phone into his jacket pocket. His relaxed, easy smile faded the moment he saw my pale face. He dropped to one knee beside the bench, his hand resting gently over mine.

"Hey... what's wrong?" Ben asked, his brow furrowing with instant concern. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

"Worse," I whispered, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to keep it steady. I handed him the letter with the red wax seal. "A messenger boy just handed this to me. He said a man at the gate paid him to deliver it."

Ben took the parchment, his eyes scanning the elegant gold handwriting. As he read the words, I watched the warmth completely drain from his features, replaced by the cold, tactical hardness I hadn't seen since the final days of the Vanguard Apex war.

"The Seven Spheres," Ben muttered, tracing the Phoenix crest with his thumb. "This isn't a joke, Lydia. The wax seal... this is a pressurized micro-stamp. It’s custom-milled. Whoever sent this has serious resources."

I looked down at Clara, who was still sleeping peacefully in her vintage silver pram, completely oblivious to the target that had just been painted on her back.

"They know about Paris," I said, a cold shiver running down my spine. "They know we planned to take her there for her first birthday next month. Ben, we aren't free. The Apex was just the outer wall. We just kicked open the door to the inner sanctum."

Ben stood up, his eyes scanning the perimeter of the gardens with predatory focus. "Pack the pram, Lydia. We need to leave. Right now."
