Chapter 9 - The Cross Examination

Lawyer: You claim my client abandoned you,

yet bank records show he transferred fifty thousand dollars to your account,

is that not correct?

Maid: He sent that money with a letter,

telling me to get an abortion,

and to never contact him again.

Lawyer: Objection,

hearsay,

we do not have this alleged letter.

Maid: I do have it,

I gave it to my lawyer,

it is entered as Exhibit C.

Judge: Overruled,

the letter is in evidence,

please continue.

Lawyer: Even so,

you took the money,

you spent the money, did you not?

Maid: I used it to pay for my mother's funeral,

and to survive my pregnancy alone,

I had no other choice.

Lawyer: So you admit you benefited financially from my client,

making your claim of total abandonment false,

is that right?

Maid: Giving someone money to kill their child is not support,

it is a crime of the heart,

it is pure evil.

Lawyer: Let us stick to the facts,

you have been unemployed for six months,

how can you provide for a growing boy?

Maid: I lost my job because of the harassment,

your private investigators followed me everywhere,

they scared my employers.

Lawyer: That is a ridiculous accusation,

do you have any proof of this supposed harassment?

Maid: I have photographs of the men sitting outside my apartment,

watching my son play in the park,

terrifying us.

Lawyer: Your Honor,

this woman is paranoid,

she is clearly unstable and unfit to parent.

Maid: I am a mother protecting her cub,

I am not unstable,

I am fiercely awake.

Lawyer: No further questions for this witness,

she has clearly demonstrated her emotional volatility,

thank you.

Judge: You may step down,

call your next witness,

let us keep this moving.

Maid: He twisted my words,

he made me look crazy,

I am shaking.

Lawyer: You did perfectly,

the jury saw your pain,

they saw his lawyer's cruelty.

Maid: I hope so,

I feel so exposed,

my whole life picked apart.

Lawyer: That is what they do,

they break you down,

but we will build you back up.

Judge: Call the next witness to the stand,

please state your name for the record,

loud and clear.
