Chapter 10 - The Vanguard Proposition

|

The next morning, the financial district of Chicago was buzzing with morning commuters and aggressive corporate ambition. Inside the towering, glass-and-steel monolith of Vanguard Headquarters, Julian Vance sat behind a massive mahogany desk, sipping black coffee while reviewing the morning stock tickers.

The door to his office swung open without a knock. His lead legal counsel, a sharp-faced man named Robert Sterling—distantly related to the fallen Victor—strode into the room, holding a freshly printed tablet.

"We have a massive problem, Julian," Robert said, slamming the tablet onto the desk.

Julian didn't look up from his coffee. "Relax, Robert. Sterling is in custody, yes, but his shell companies were airtight. The federal prosecutors won't trace the Zurich funds back to us. We have plausible deniability."

"It's not Sterling," Robert snapped, his voice tight with panic. "It’s Costello."

Julian paused, the coffee cup halfway to his mouth. "Costello? The cripple? He’s been out of commission for a decade. He just stumbled through a PR stunt at a charity gala."

"He didn't stumble, Julian. He walked," Robert corrected sharply, tapping the screen. "And as of two hours ago, Costello’s legal team filed an emergency motion to freeze every single asset Vanguard holds in the Midwest. Furthermore... they’ve initiated a hostile takeover of our primary logistics subsidiary."

Julian stood up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the plush carpet. "That’s impossible! He doesn't have the capital. Sterling drained his accounts!"

"Sterling thought he drained his accounts," Robert corrected grimly. "Costello’s wealth was locked in a dormant trust that only activated when he physically regained control of his estate. He’s liquid, he’s furious, and he’s coming right for us."

Before Julian could process the terrifying magnitude of the situation, the heavy oak doors of his office were kicked open.

Two armed security guards slammed backward into the room, unconscious before they even hit the floor. Stepping calmly through the doorway, flanked by Marcus and a team of federal marshals, was Luca Costello.

He didn't use a wheelchair. He didn't lean on a cane.

Dressed in a sharp three-piece suit, Luca walked with slow, deliberate, terrifyingly steady steps, his carbon-fiber braces clicking softly against the marble floor. He stopped in the center of the office, fixing Julian Vance with a cold, dead-eyed stare that promised absolute annihilation.

"Good morning, Julian," Luca said, his voice rich, deep, and echoing off the glass walls. "I hear you've been looking for me."
