Chapter 8 - Marcus Returns from Zurich

|

The private jet touched down on the Costello airstrip just as dusk began to paint the horizon in shades of bruised purple and fiery orange. Luca waited inside his private hangar, seated in a high-backed leather armchair with his crutches resting against the arm. He didn't want to rely on the wheelchair anymore; every step he took was a deliberate reclamation of his dignity.

The ramp lowered with a hydraulic hiss, and Marcus stepped out into the chilly night air, carrying a secure metal briefcase locked to his wrist.

Marcus walked straight toward Luca, his face grim. He didn't offer a celebratory smile about Sterling’s downfall. That meant the news from Zurich was heavy.

"Boss," Marcus greeted, nodding respectfully. "You shouldn't be standing."

"I've spent twelve years sitting, Marcus. Give me the report," Luca demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "Who financed Sterling?"

Marcus unlocked the briefcase and pulled out a thick manila folder, handing it to Luca. Inside were financial ledgers, encrypted email printouts, and a corporate charter bearing a crest Luca hadn't seen in over a decade.

"It wasn't just a shell company," Marcus explained, stepping closer. "The money came from a Swiss trust tied directly to the Vanguard Group. More specifically, a man named Julian Vance."

Luca froze. The name hung in the air like frost.

"Vance," Luca repeated slowly, the syllables tasting like ash in his mouth. "The Vanguard Group... Elena’s estranged family."

"Yes, sir," Marcus confirmed grimly. "When Elena’s father passed away and she walked away from their corporate empire to build her own life, Vanguard lost control of certain proprietary tech patents she held. Sterling was their hired gun. They funded his entire operation to bankrupt your logistics network, buy up your distressed assets for pennies, and ultimately absorb your empire into their portfolio."

Luca’s grip on the arm of his chair tightened so hard the leather groaned under his fingers. The realization hit him with seismic force. This wasn't just a local turf war orchestrated by a jealous corporate rival. This was a calculated, multi-layered assault masterminded by a bloodline that had tried to control Elena, and when they couldn't control her, they tried to destroy everything she loved.

"Does Elena know?" Luca asked, his voice deathly quiet.

"Not yet," Marcus replied. "I wanted you to see the files first."

Luca stood up, pushing himself out of the chair using his crutches. He took a slow, deliberate breath, his jaw set like granite.

"Vanguard thought they were playing a chess game with a ghost," Luca said, his eyes flashing with lethal intent. "They’re about to find out the king is back on the board."
