Chapter 24 - The Competitor's Bluff

The meeting was set in the neutral territory of a high-end downtown steakhouse. The private dining room was paneled in dark wood, the atmosphere thick with the smell of expensive cigars and aged bourbon.
Richard Vance sat at the head of the table, projecting an aura of smug, untouchable confidence. He believed he had the legendary Luca Costello entirely trapped.
The heavy doors opened, and Luca walked in, his braces clicking with a steady, intimidating rhythm. He didn't bring an entourage of lawyers or security guards. He came alone, exuding the quiet, terrifying dignity of an apex predator.
Luca took his seat opposite Richard, resting his crutches against the table.
"Luca," Richard smiled, a greasy, condescending expression. "I must say, I am surprised you agreed to meet so quickly. I assume you brought the updated contracts with my revised freight tariffs?"
"I didn't bring any contracts, Richard," Luca replied smoothly, ignoring the glass of water a waiter placed in front of him. "I came to offer you a piece of advice."
Richard scoffed, leaning back in his chair. "I don't need advice from a man whose supply lines are bleeding out. You have two choices, Costello. Pay my toll, or watch your factories shut down."
Luca interlaced his fingers, resting his elbows on the table. He looked at Richard with a gaze so intensely piercing it made the other man involuntarily shift in his seat.
"You bought those trucking hubs using a variable-interest loan from Vanguard Fidelity," Luca stated calmly. "You leveraged your entire corporate pension fund to secure the capital."
Richard’s smug smile faltered slightly. "My financing is none of your concern."
"It became my concern when you tried to extort my company," Luca corrected softly. "You assumed I relied entirely on the highway system. But as of 8:00 AM this morning, Costello Industries officially acquired a private fleet of commercial freight trains. We are bypassing your hubs entirely."
The color rapidly drained from Richard’s face. "That... that’s impossible. The rail syndicate doesn't sell to private manufacturers."
"They do when I offer to rebuild their entire aging infrastructure in exchange for exclusive routing rights," Luca smiled, a cold, brilliant flash of triumph. "I don't need your trucks, Richard. And without my freight, you cannot make your quarterly loan payments."
Richard stared at him, genuine panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. "You will bankrupt me. You will destroy my company!"

"You destroyed your company the moment you decided to test me," Luca said, picking up his crutches and standing tall. "You thought my refusal to use violence meant I was weak. You forgot that I am a businessman, Richard. And I just bought your future."
Luca turned and walked out of the private dining room, leaving the broken executive sitting alone in the ruins of his own arrogance.
