Chapter 29 - Leo's Choice

|
The years moved forward with a steady, peaceful rhythm. Leo Vance had flourished under the protective shadow of the Costello family. He had graduated from law school near the top of his class, shedding the terrified, broken demeanor of his youth to become a sharp, brilliant legal mind.
On the morning of his twenty-fifth birthday, a massive legal milestone occurred: the multi-million-dollar trust fund established by his disgraced father, Julian Vance, formally matured and transferred into Leo's sole control.
Leo sat in Luca’s private study, staring at the heavy leather folder containing the bank transfer documents. Luca sat behind his mahogany desk, reviewing a contract, intentionally giving the young man space to process the moment.
"It's over thirty million dollars," Leo said quietly, tracing the embossed seal on the folder.
"It is a substantial amount of capital," Luca agreed, setting his pen down. "You could start your own firm. You could travel the world. You are completely free, Leo. The Vance board has absolutely no legal claim to that money anymore."
Leo looked up, his eyes meeting Luca’s. There was no hesitation in his gaze, only a deep, resounding clarity.
"My father built this wealth by crushing smaller companies, exploiting labor loopholes, and terrorizing my aunt," Leo stated, his voice completely steady. "It’s blood money, Mr. Costello. I don't want it."
Luca raised a single eyebrow, genuinely intrigued. "You are turning away thirty million dollars? What exactly do you intend to do with it?"
Leo reached into his briefcase and pulled out a freshly drafted legal document, sliding it across the desk toward Luca.
"I am donating it," Leo said proudly. "Every single cent. I drafted the transfer paperwork this morning. I am moving the entire trust into the Costello-Vance Foundation's emergency legal defense fund. It will be used exclusively to hire top-tier attorneys for victims of corporate fraud and domestic abuse."
Luca stared at the document, profoundly moved by the young man’s absolute rejection of his toxic inheritance. He had taken a frightened boy from the ruins of the Vance empire and inadvertently forged a noble, principled warrior.
"Your father would be spinning in his grave," Luca noted, a small, triumphant smile touching his lips.
"Let him spin," Leo replied fiercely. "I am not a Vance anymore, sir. I am a Costello by loyalty, if not by blood. And I want to work for the Foundation full-time. If you will have me."

Luca picked up his pen and signed his name as the accepting trustee on the donation form.
"Welcome to the family business, Leo," Luca smiled, handing the document back. "Elena is going to put you to work reviewing case files by noon."
