Chapter 9 - The Family Secret

|

The fire crackled warmly in the grand stone hearth of the Costello study. The house was quiet, the deep silence of the night wrapping around the estate like a heavy blanket. Maya was fast asleep in her room upstairs, exhausted from a full day of playing in the botanical gardens.

Elena sat on the velvet sofa, pouring a cup of chamomile tea. She looked up as Luca walked into the room, leaning on his crutches, his face carrying a solemn weight that she hadn't seen since the night of the gala.

"You've been locked in your office with Marcus for two hours," Elena said softly, setting the teapot down. "Luca, what’s wrong? Did something happen with the banks?"

Luca didn't answer immediately. He walked over to the fireplace, leaning one crutch against the stone mantel while he steadied himself, staring down into the orange flames.

"Marcus found the source of Sterling's funding," Luca said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.

Elena’s hands froze around her teacup. She looked at his rigid posture, feeling a sudden, icy dread pool in her stomach. "Who?"

"Vanguard Group," Luca said, turning to face her. "Julian Vance."

The color drained entirely from Elena’s face. The cup slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble hearth, splashing hot tea across the stone. She stood up abruptly, her breath catching in her throat as the ghosts of her past slammed into her with terrifying violence.

"No," Elena whispered, shaking her head frantically. "No, that’s impossible. I left them behind. I cut ties with my family the day I realized what kind of monsters they were."

Luca crossed the room as fast as his braced legs would carry him, dropping the crutches and catching her by the shoulders before her knees could buckle. He pulled her against his chest, holding her tightly as she began to tremble.

"They used Sterling, Elena," Luca murmured into her hair. "They funded his sabotage. They wanted my empire, yes, but they also wanted to ensure you had nowhere to run when they broke me."

"They're my family," Elena sobbed quietly against his chest, the tears she had held back for years finally breaking free. "How could they do this? How could they weaponize a man like Sterling against the father of my child?"

"Because to people like the Vances, blood is just a currency," Luca said fiercely, cupping her face in his hands and forcing her to look into his eyes. "And they picked the wrong family to cross. I spent twelve years in the dark, Elena. But I am standing now. And I will burn Vanguard to the ground before I let them lay a single finger on you or Maya."

Elena looked at the man who had fought his way back from the grave for her. The terror in her heart began to melt, replaced by a fierce, unyielding resolve. They were no longer running from the shadows. They were walking straight into the fire.
