Chapter 33 - A Walk in the Park

|
The sheer simplicity of a normal life was the ultimate luxury.
It was a brilliant, breezy Sunday afternoon in early October. The trees in Millennium Park were ablaze with vibrant autumn colors.
Luca, Elena, and Maya were taking a casual stroll along the winding, paved pathways. There were no black SUVs trailing them. There was no visible security perimeter. Marcus was currently enjoying a highly-deserved vacation in Florida, and the family was completely, beautifully alone in public.
Luca walked steadily, his carbon-fiber braces clicking softly in rhythm with his mahogany crutches. He wore a comfortable cashmere sweater and dark jeans, looking completely at ease.
Maya was walking a few paces ahead, enthusiastically eating a massive, melting ice cream cone and pointing out the various dogs playing in the open grass.
Elena walked close beside Luca, their shoulders occasionally brushing. She held a warm cup of coffee, looking incredibly peaceful.
"Do you realize what we are doing right now?" Elena asked softly, looking around the crowded, chaotic public park.
"We are freezing to death because our daughter insisted on eating ice cream in fifty-degree weather?" Luca joked, a warm smile crinkling the corners of his eyes.
"We are walking in a park, Luca," Elena corrected, stopping to look at him, her eyes shining with profound realization. "No bodyguards. No armored cars. No looking over our shoulders to see if Julian Vance or Victor Sterling sent someone to hurt us. We are just... a normal family on a Sunday."
Luca stopped, leaning his weight onto his crutches. He looked at the diverse, bustling crowd of people around them—families picnicking, couples laughing, children running freely. None of them looked at him with terror. None of them whispered his name in fear. To the world, he was just a distinguished man walking with his beautiful wife and daughter.
"It took a very long time to get here," Luca murmured, reaching out to gently tuck a stray lock of hair behind Elena’s ear. "I almost didn't survive the journey."
"But you did," Elena smiled, leaning into his touch. "We all did."

"Dad! Mom! Hurry up!" Maya yelled from a few yards away, waving a sticky, ice-cream-covered hand. "There's a golden retriever over here and he wants to be my best friend!"
Luca laughed, the rich, booming sound carrying clearly over the autumn wind. He adjusted his grip on his crutches and stepped forward, walking into the bright, beautiful sunlight.
