Chapter 11 - The Tables Turn

|

The silence in Julian Vance’s office was so heavy you could hear the hum of the city lights outside. Julian stared at Luca, his face turning the color of curdled milk. He had built his entire career on the assumption that Luca Costello was a broken man, permanently confined to the shadows of his own paralysis.

Seeing him standing there, upright, immovable, and radiating raw, unbridled power, shattered Julian’s composure completely.

"Costello..." Julian choked out, taking an involuntary step back until his legs hit the edge of his mahogany desk. "You... you can't just barge in here. This is private property. I'll have you arrested for trespassing!"

Luca didn't blink. He took another slow, deliberate step forward, the click of his braces sounding like a ticking clock of doom.

"Trespassing?" Luca repeated, a dark, humorless smile touching the corner of his lips. "Julian, let’s talk about trespassing. Let’s talk about you funding a domestic terrorist in a cheap suit to poison me, steal my mobility, and tear apart my life for twelve long years."

"I have no idea what you're talking about!" Julian stammered, though his voice cracked miserably. "You have no evidence!"

Marcus stepped up beside Luca, tossing a heavy, encrypted hard drive onto Julian’s desk. It slid across the polished wood, stopping right against Julian’s coffee cup.

"That drive contains every wire transfer, every encrypted email, and every shell company routing slip connecting Vanguard Group to Victor Sterling," Marcus stated coldly. "Federal prosecutors are already mirroring the data. By noon, a federal judge is signing warrants for your arrest, your CFO's arrest, and the seizure of every asset this corporation owns."

Robert Sterling lunged toward the desk, grabbing the hard drive with shaking hands, but Marcus’s hand shot out like a vise, clamping down around Robert’s wrist until the man cried out in pain.

"I wouldn't touch that if I were you," Marcus warned softly, releasing him with a shove that sent Robert stumbling into the bookshelves.

Luca rested his hands on the top of his custom forearm crutches, which he had brought along just to pace his weight. He leaned in close to Julian, his dark eyes locking onto the terrified man.

"You thought you could break my empire. You thought you could use Sterling to keep me chained to a chair forever," Luca whispered, his voice dangerously low. "And worst of all... you thought you could terrorize the woman I love."

Julian swallowed hard, his throat dry as bone. "Elena... Elena is a Vance. She belongs to our family—"

"Elena belongs to me," Luca interrupted, his voice booming across the office with the absolute authority of a king. "She walked away from your toxic bloodline years ago, and you couldn't stand the thought of her being free. So you tried to destroy everything she touched. Well, your game is over, Julian."

At that exact moment, the office doors swung wide open again. Federal marshals swarmed the room, reading Julian his rights and slamming steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, echoing snap.

As Julian was dragged away, kicking and screaming obscenities into the pristine corporate air, Luca stood tall, watching his enemies fall exactly where they belonged. The shadow of Vanguard was broken.
