Chapter 27 - A Step Too Far

|
The high of the courtroom victory carried the family through the summer, but the relentless drive that made Luca such a formidable CEO occasionally became his greatest liability.
Determined to walk Maya down the aisle one day without the assistance of his mahogany crutches, Luca had secretly doubled the intensity of his physical therapy sessions. He spent grueling hours in the private gym of the estate, pushing his damaged nerves and braced legs far beyond their medical limits.
It was late on a rainy Tuesday night. The house was quiet. Elena was asleep in the master suite, and Marcus was on patrol outside.
Luca stood in the center of the gym, breathing heavily, sweat soaking through his grey t-shirt. His carbon-fiber braces were locked tight. He stared at the mirror on the far wall, gripping the parallel support bars.
"Just five steps," Luca muttered to himself, his jaw clenched in absolute determination. "You survived a poison that should have killed you. You can take five damn steps."
He let go of the right support bar. His leg trembled violently, protesting the sudden shift in weight. He gritted his teeth and let go of the left bar.
For two seconds, he stood entirely unassisted. A fierce, triumphant fire ignited in his chest.
He lifted his right foot, forcing the weakened muscles to push the heavy brace forward. The step landed clumsily, but it landed.
Encouraged, he shifted his weight to take the second step.
It was a fatal miscalculation. The damaged nerves in his left hip suddenly gave out, misfiring in a chaotic burst of static pain. The brace buckled under the awkward angle.
Luca crashed to the padded gym floor with a heavy, sickening thud. The impact jolted his spine, knocking the wind completely out of his lungs.
He lay on the cold mat, staring up at the ceiling lights. The physical pain was sharp, but the psychological agony was infinitely worse. He slammed his fist onto the mat, a raw, guttural roar of pure frustration echoing in the empty room.
He was the king of Chicago. He had dismantled billion-dollar corporations and crushed his enemies without blinking. Yet, he couldn't walk ten feet across his own gym without falling like a broken doll.
The heavy gym door suddenly swung open. Elena stood in the doorway, wearing her silk robe, her eyes wide with panic from hearing the crash.

"Luca!" she gasped, rushing across the room and dropping to her knees beside him.
"Don't," Luca growled, pushing himself up onto his elbows, turning his face away to hide the hot, humiliated tears stinging his eyes. "Just... leave me alone, Elena. Let me get up myself."
