Chapter 28 - The Quiet Strength

Elena didn't leave. She ignored his harsh tone, recognizing the deep, agonizing shame radiating from his rigid posture. She sat cross-legged on the gym mat, patiently waiting as Luca struggled to drag himself over to the support bars and hoist his body back into a sitting position against the wall.
He leaned his head back against the mirror, his chest heaving, refusing to look at her.
"I wanted to walk across the room," Luca whispered, his voice cracking with a vulnerability he rarely showed anyone. "I just wanted to be a normal man for five minutes. I wanted to prove the doctors wrong."
Elena moved closer, gently resting her hand over his trembling knee, right above the carbon-fiber joint of the brace.
"Luca, look at me," she said softly, her voice carrying a fiercely protective warmth.
He slowly turned his head, his dark eyes filled with absolute defeat.
"You survived a neurotoxin that was designed to completely destroy your central nervous system," Elena reminded him, her gaze locking onto his. "You fought your way out of a wheelchair when every medical expert told you that you would be a quadriplegic for the rest of your life. You are standing on two feet, leading a global empire, and raising a beautiful daughter."
She reached up, cupping his sweat-drenched cheek, her thumb wiping away a stray tear.
"Your strength is not defined by how many steps you can take without a crutch, Luca Costello," Elena said fiercely. "Your strength is in your mind. It is in your heart. It is in the way you completely shattered an empire of cruelty and built a sanctuary for the people who need you. You are the strongest man I have ever known."
Luca closed his eyes, leaning heavily into her touch. The crushing, suffocating weight of his own unrealistic expectations slowly began to crack and fall away.
"I just hate feeling weak," he admitted hoarsely.

"You are not weak because your legs need support," Elena replied, leaning forward and pressing her forehead against his. "You are human. And I love every single broken, mended, and braced piece of you."
Luca wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her onto his lap, burying his face in her soft hair. They sat together on the floor of the gym for a long time, the silence no longer heavy with shame, but filled with the profound, unbreakable peace of absolute acceptance.
