Chapter 22 - The First Dance

|
The annual Chicago Philanthropic Gala was the most exclusive event of the season. The Costello-Vance Foundation was the guest of honor, celebrated for its unprecedented success in dismantling corrupt corporate networks.
The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of crystal chandeliers, flowing silk gowns, and sharp tuxedos.
Luca stood near the edge of the polished dance floor, leaning comfortably on his mahogany crutches. He wore a flawless, bespoke black tuxedo, his carbon-fiber braces completely hidden beneath the tailored trousers. Elena stood beside him in a breathtaking, floor-length crimson gown, chatting animatedly with a group of city council members.
The orchestra seamlessly transitioned into a slow, sweeping waltz.
Couples began to glide onto the floor. Elena looked at the dancers, a faint, wistful smile touching her lips, before turning her attention back to her husband. She never asked him to dance; she knew the physical toll standing for long periods took on his body, and she loved him far too much to push him.
But Luca had been keeping a secret.
For the past six months, he had been undergoing grueling, agonizingly painful physical therapy sessions in secret with Marcus's help. He had pushed his muscles to the absolute breaking point, training his upper body and core to support his weight with minimal assistance from the crutches.
Luca turned to Elena, his dark eyes incredibly soft and filled with boundless love.
"Mrs. Costello," Luca murmured, his deep voice cutting through the noise of the ballroom.
Elena looked up, her smile widening. "Yes, Mr. Costello?"
Luca slowly, deliberately, handed his right crutch to Marcus, who was standing nearby. Then, holding his remaining crutch in his left hand for balance, he extended his right hand toward his wife.
"May I have this dance?" Luca asked.
Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. Tears instantly welled in her eyes. "Luca... your legs. Are you sure?"
"I have been practicing for six months just for this three-minute song," Luca smiled, his gaze unwavering. "I am absolutely sure."
Elena took his hand, her fingers trembling slightly. Luca pulled her close, wrapping his strong right arm around her waist, using the single crutch to pivot his weight.
They stepped onto the dance floor.
The crowd around them naturally parted, a wave of profound, respectful silence washing over the room. They all knew the story of the paralyzed king who had fought his way out of a wheelchair to reclaim his empire.
Luca led her in a slow, careful, incredibly beautiful waltz. He couldn't glide or spin like the other couples, but the sheer, raw willpower it took for him to move in rhythm with the music was the most breathtaking thing in the room.
Elena rested her head against his chest, tears of pure joy slipping down her cheeks.
May you like
"You are impossible," Elena whispered fiercely, holding him tight.
"I am just a man who finally has everything he ever wanted," Luca replied, kissing the top of her head as the music swelled, the shadows of the past completely banished by the blinding light of their love.
