Chapter 25 - Elena in the Courtroom

|
The Costello-Vance Foundation had recently expanded its mandate to include direct legal representation for victims of high-level corporate and domestic abuse. Elena, having recently passed her final bar examinations with flying colors, was preparing for her very first major trial as lead counsel.
Her client was Sarah—the same terrified mother who had walked through the Foundation's doors on their opening day.
Sarah’s ex-husband, a powerful investment banker named Gregory, had hired a team of aggressive, highly-paid defense attorneys to completely bleed Sarah dry in civil court. He was demanding full custody of their children and attempting to hide millions of dollars in marital assets through offshore shell companies.
The courtroom was packed. The air was sterile and tense.
Elena sat at the plaintiff's table, sorting through her meticulously organized legal briefs. She wore a sharp, tailored grey suit, her posture radiating absolute, unshakeable confidence. Luca sat in the front row of the gallery, his dark eyes locked proudly onto his wife.
Gregory’s lead attorney, a slick, condescending man named Harrison, approached the podium to deliver his opening statement.
"Your Honor, this case is nothing more than a vindictive attempt by a bitter ex-wife to extort my client," Harrison proclaimed loudly, gesturing toward Sarah. "My client is a respected pillar of the financial community. The plaintiff’s claims of financial abuse are entirely fabricated, fueled by the sensationalist agenda of the Costello-Vance Foundation."
Elena didn't flinch. When it was her turn, she stood up, grabbed a single manila folder, and walked calmly to the center of the courtroom.
"Mr. Harrison speaks of his client as a pillar of the community," Elena began, her voice clear and ringing with absolute authority. "But a pillar's strength is tested by what it supports in the dark, away from the public eye."
She opened the folder, pulling out a stack of heavily redacted banking documents.
"The defense claims my client is fabricating financial abuse," Elena continued, making direct eye contact with the judge. "Yet, we have subpoenaed the encrypted server logs from Gregory’s private investment firm. These logs detail over seventy unauthorized transfers from their joint marital accounts into a blind trust located in the Cayman Islands. These transfers occurred exactly two days after my client was admitted to the hospital for a 'fall down the stairs'."
Gregory’s face turned a sickly shade of pale. Harrison jumped to his feet.
"Objection, Your Honor! These logs are proprietary corporate information!"
"They are evidence of systemic, malicious financial terror, Your Honor," Elena countered fiercely, her voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls. "He did not just break her body; he attempted to erase her existence by starving her of the resources she needed to escape."

The judge slammed his gavel, his eyes narrowing at the defense table. "Objection overruled. Proceed, Counselor."
Elena turned slightly, catching Luca’s proud, blazing smile in the gallery. She wasn't just fighting for Sarah; she was fighting for every woman who had ever been told she was powerless.
