Chapter 32 - The Old Safe

|
While renovating a heavily secured, long-forgotten sub-basement beneath the original Costello estate, workers uncovered a massive, antique steel safe hidden behind a false wall.
Luca had it brought up to his private study. It was a relic from his father’s era—the brutal, bloody days of the Costello crime syndicate that Luca had spent his life trying to eradicate.
Late that night, after the house was asleep, Luca sat in front of the rusted steel box. Marcus had managed to crack the old combination lock, leaving the heavy door slightly ajar.
Luca pulled the door open. Inside, there were no bricks of illicit cash or hidden weapons. There was only a small, velvet-lined mahogany box and a single, sealed envelope addressed to him in his late mother’s elegant handwriting.
His breath caught in his throat. His mother had died when he was very young, a quiet, tragic casualty of his father’s violent lifestyle.
He carefully opened the envelope, unfolding the brittle, yellowed paper.
My dearest Luca,
If you are reading this, it means you have finally taken control of this house. Your father believes that fear is the only way to rule the world. He is raising you to be a monster, to inherit his darkness. But I see the light in your eyes, my beautiful boy.
I know I will not survive this life long enough to protect you. But please, promise me that you will not let the Costello name become a permanent curse. You have a brilliant mind and a good heart. Break the chains. Build something that doesn't require blood to survive. Be the man I know you can be.
With all my love, forever,
Mom.
Luca stared at the faded ink, tears blurring his vision. For decades, he had carried the crushing, suffocating guilt of his family's sins. He had fought so hard to cleanse his empire, always wondering if the bloodstains could ever truly be washed away.
He opened the small velvet box. Inside was a simple, delicate silver crucifix—the one his mother used to wear every single day.
Elena walked into the study, wearing her silk robe, noticing his tears immediately. She hurried over, kneeling beside his chair, looking at the letter in his hands.

"She knew, Luca," Elena whispered, reading the beautiful, tragic words. "She knew exactly who you really were, even before you did."
Luca clutched the silver crucifix tightly in his fist, pulling Elena into a desperate, crushing embrace. The final, lingering ghost of his dark past was permanently laid to rest. He had fulfilled his mother’s dying wish. The curse was finally broken.
