Chapter 6 - The Shadows of Zurich

|
The dust of Victor Sterling’s dramatic public arrest had barely settled over the grand ballroom before Luca Costello was back in his high-backed leather chair, the very epicenter of the Costello empire. The room was heavy with the scent of old mahogany, burning cedar, and espresso. Maya was safely tucked away in the private family quarters upstairs, finishing her homework with a private tutor, while Elena stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the glittering night skyline of the city.
Luca sat behind his expansive desk. Though he could support his weight with the braces for short bursts, the sheer adrenaline of the gala had taken a toll on his body. He kept his forearm crutches leaning against the side of the desk, his jaw tight as he reviewed a thick dossier stamped with red ink.
"Zurich," Luca murmured, his voice cutting through the quiet hum of the air conditioner. "Sterling thought he wiped every server clean before he skipped the country. He forgot that shell companies always leave a paper trail when greed outweighs caution."
Elena turned away from the window, her expression etched with lingering concern. "Sterling is behind bars, Luca. His assets are frozen. Why are you still looking at Swiss accounts? The nightmare is over."
"The nightmare is over for Sterling," Luca replied, not looking up from the documents. "But someone financed his escape route. Sterling didn't have the brains or the capital to orchestrate a twelve-year corporate sabotage campaign all by himself. He was a puppet. Someone else was holding the strings."
Elena walked over, resting her hands on the edge of the desk. "Who?"
"That’s what we are going to find out," Luca said, sliding a photograph across the polished wood. It showed a grainy security still of a man in a dark trench coat meeting Sterling outside a Zurich bank three days before the gala. "Marcus, my head of security, is already on a private flight to Switzerland. By morning, we’ll have a name."
Elena looked at the photograph, a cold knot forming in her stomach. She thought they had finally reached the safety of the shore, but Luca’s world was vast, deep, and filled with unseen predators. She reached out, placing her hand gently over his clenched fist.
"Just promise me one thing," she whispered.
Luca looked up, his dark eyes softening instantly as they met hers. "Anything."

"Don't let this war consume you again," Elena said softly. "You fought your way back to your feet tonight, Luca. Don't spend the rest of your life looking over your shoulder for ghosts."
Luca turned his hand over, intertwining his fingers with hers. "I won't. I fought my way back for you and Maya. Nothing will ever take me away from you again."
