Chapter 26 - The Verdict

|
The trial lasted for three grueling weeks. Elena was an absolute force of nature in the courtroom. She dismantled Gregory’s high-paid expert witnesses with surgical precision, exposing their biased financial valuations and destroying the false narrative of the "hysterical wife."
On the final day of the trial, the tension in the courtroom was suffocating. Sarah sat next to Elena, her hands trembling as she clutched a crumpled tissue.
The judge, a stern, older woman with a reputation for merciless fairness, entered the room and took the bench. She didn't waste time with pleasantries.
"Having reviewed the overwhelming forensic financial evidence and the deeply disturbing pattern of psychological and physical coercion presented by the plaintiff's counsel, this court finds unequivocally in favor of the plaintiff," the judge announced, her gavel striking the sounding block with a resounding crack.
Sarah let out a sharp, breathless sob, covering her face with her hands.
"Furthermore," the judge continued, her gaze dropping to Gregory, who looked entirely defeated at the defense table. "The defendant is ordered to immediately release all frozen marital assets, with a heavy punitive multiplier applied for the malicious concealment of funds. Full, sole custody of the minor children is granted to the plaintiff. The defendant will only be permitted heavily supervised visitation upon the completion of a court-mandated psychiatric evaluation."
The courtroom erupted into quiet, shocked murmurs. It was a total, absolute victory.
Elena wrapped her arms around Sarah, holding the weeping woman tight.
"You did it, Sarah," Elena whispered fiercely. "You are free. He can never touch you or your children again."
"Thank you," Sarah sobbed into Elena’s shoulder. "You saved my life."
As the courtroom cleared, Elena packed her briefcase, her heart swelling with an indescribable, soaring triumph. She turned around to see Luca standing near the gallery railing, resting on his crutches. Maya and Leo were standing right beside him, both grinning from ear to ear.
Elena walked through the wooden swinging gate and practically threw herself into Luca’s arms.
"Counselor," Luca murmured, his deep voice thick with pride as he kissed her deeply. "You were magnificent. You burned his entire empire of lies to the ground."
"I had an excellent teacher in the art of taking down monsters," Elena smiled, wiping a tear of joy from her eye.

Maya hugged her mother tightly. "You were like a superhero up there, Mom! The bad guy’s lawyer looked like he was going to cry!"
"That," Elena laughed, taking Maya’s hand and linking her other arm through Luca’s, "is exactly what justice looks like. Let's go home and celebrate."
