Chapter 23 - The Supply Chain Crisis

|
The corporate world was rarely quiet for long. While the Foundation thrived, Costello Industries faced a sudden, aggressive challenge from a new player in the Midwest market.
Apex Logistics, a massive conglomerate known for its cutthroat monopolistic practices, had systematically bought up the primary shipping routes out of Chicago. Their CEO, a notoriously ruthless man named Richard Vance—a distant, bitter cousin of Elena’s estranged family—had orchestrated the buyout specifically to choke Costello Industries' supply chain.
Luca sat in his corner office, the sprawling city skyline serving as a backdrop to the glowing digital maps on his desk. Marcus and a team of senior analysts stood around the room, looking grim.
"Richard Vance has effectively blockaded our primary shipping hubs," the lead analyst reported, tapping a red zone on the map. "He is demanding a sixty percent markup on all freight passing through his newly acquired terminals. If we don't pay the toll, our manufacturing plants will halt production within two weeks."
"It's a shakedown," Marcus growled, his arms crossed over his chest. "He knows the Vance name alone will get under your skin. He wants you to react emotionally."
Luca didn't flinch. He picked up his espresso cup, taking a slow, calculated sip. The old Luca might have sent men in the middle of the night to persuade Richard to reconsider through violent, terrifying means.
The new Luca relied on a far more devastating weapon: his unparalleled intellect.
"Richard thinks he is playing checkers, trying to block my pieces," Luca murmured, a dangerous, brilliant smile curving his lips. "He doesn't realize we are playing three-dimensional chess."
"What is the play, boss?" Marcus asked.
"Apex Logistics over-leveraged their assets to buy those shipping hubs," Luca explained, pulling up a financial dossier on his screen. "They took out massive, high-interest loans from three regional banks. They need our extortion money to cover their quarterly debt payments."
"So we starve them out?" the analyst asked.
"No. We go around them," Luca stated, locking his braces and standing up. "Contact the national rail syndicate. I want to buy a fleet of private freight trains. We will bypass the trucking routes entirely and move our product by rail. It will cost us more upfront, but within three months, Richard Vance’s shiny new shipping hubs will be completely empty. His loans will default, and his company will collapse under its own weight."

The room fell silent, the analysts staring in awe at the sheer, brutal elegance of the strategy. It was entirely legal, perfectly ethical, and absolutely lethal.
"Set up a meeting with Richard for tomorrow afternoon," Luca ordered, reaching for his crutches. "I want to look him in the eye when he realizes he just bankrupted his own empire."
