Chapter 18 - A Ghost from the Vances

|

The winter snow had begun to fall over the Costello estate, dusting the sprawling gardens in a layer of pristine white. Inside the warm, cedar-scented study, Elena sat by the roaring fireplace, sorting through the morning mail. Most of it was routine Foundation business, but one envelope caught her eye. It was made of thick, expensive parchment, bearing a postmark from London.

She opened it carefully. As she read the handwritten letter inside, the color slowly drained from her face.

Luca walked into the study, carrying two mugs of hot tea. He immediately noticed the tension in her shoulders. He set the mugs down on the coffee table and sat beside her on the velvet sofa, his brow furrowing with concern.

"What is it?" Luca asked, gently taking her hand. "Did someone threaten the Foundation?"

"No," Elena whispered, her eyes glued to the paper. "It's a letter from Leo. My nephew. Julian Vance’s youngest son."

Luca’s jaw tightened at the mention of the Vance name. Julian had orchestrated the financial terrorism that nearly destroyed their family, a man who viewed bloodlines as nothing more than corporate assets.

"What does he want?" Luca asked, his protective instincts instantly flaring.

"He is nineteen years old," Elena explained, her voice trembling slightly with empathy. "He says his father’s remaining associates are trying to force him to sign over his trust funds to rebuild their broken companies. They are keeping him isolated in Europe. He says he is terrified, Luca. He is asking for asylum."

"A Vance asking a Costello for asylum," Luca murmured, leaning back and staring into the fire. "It could be a trap. The remnants of Julian’s board might be using the boy to infiltrate our security."

"I know the risks," Elena said, looking up at him with pleading eyes. "But Luca, I remember what it felt like to be trapped in that family. I remember the suffocating fear, the feeling that you are nothing but a pawn to be sacrificed. If he is telling the truth, we cannot leave him in the dark."

Luca looked at his wife. He saw the incredible, boundless compassion that had saved his own life when he was locked in the prison of his paralysis. He couldn't deny her this, even if it meant bringing a piece of his enemy's legacy into their home.

"Call Marcus," Luca decided, his voice softening. "Tell him to prepare the private jet. We are bringing the boy to Chicago. If he genuinely wants to escape his father's shadow, we will give him a sanctuary. But if he tries to play games, he will answer to me."
