Chapter 7 - Breakfast with Maya

|
Morning sunlight poured through the massive arched windows of the Costello estate’s sunroom, painting the marble floors in warm, golden hues. A sprawling breakfast spread of fresh pastries, scrambled eggs, and sliced fruit sat untouched on the center table. All eyes were fixed on the doorway.
A slow, steady rhythm of metal against stone echoed down the corridor.

Maya sat at the edge of her chair, her legs swinging back and forth with nervous excitement. The moment Luca walked into the room, leaning on his polished mahogany crutches with the carbon-fiber braces locked securely around his legs, Maya leaped out of her seat and ran toward him.
"Daddy!" she squealed, throwing her arms around his waist.
Luca stopped, carefully shifting his weight to one crutch while using his free arm to scoop Maya up into a tight, crushing hug. He buried his face in her dark curls, closing his eyes as a wave of profound gratitude washed over him.
"Careful, little bird," Luca chuckled, setting her back down gently. "Your old man is still getting used to being tall again."
"You walked all by yourself last night!" Maya declared, her eyes wide with unadulterated awe. "Everyone on the news is talking about it. They said you're a superhero."
Elena walked in from the kitchen carrying a plate of pancakes, laughing softly at Maya’s enthusiastic description. "Well, your father is certainly stubborn enough to be a superhero, sweetie. Now, sit down before your breakfast gets cold."
As they sat together around the table, the atmosphere was lighter than it had been in a decade. There was no terror hanging over their heads, no ticking clock of Victor Sterling’s impending betrayal. Luca watched Maya chatter excitedly about her school projects, realizing with startling clarity that this was what he had fought for. Not the corporate towers, not the bank accounts, but this ordinary, beautiful morning.
"Can we go to the park today?" Maya asked, taking a large bite of a strawberry pancake. "The one with the big wooden slide?"
Luca exchanged a glance with Elena, a quiet, unspoken understanding passing between them.

"We can do better than that," Luca smiled, cutting into his eggs. "How about we go to the private botanical gardens? No crowds, just flowers, and I promise I'll walk every single step of the way with you."
Maya squealed with delight, nearly knocking over her glass of orange juice. Elena smiled across the table, her heart swelling with a fierce, protective love. The shadows were fading, replaced by the bright, unyielding promise of a family finally reunited.
