Chapter 19 - The Sanctuary Extends

|

The private airstrip was bitterly cold as the Costello jet touched down through the winter flurries. Luca and Elena waited inside the heated hangar, accompanied by Marcus and two highly trained security specialists.

The cabin door opened, and a young man slowly descended the metal stairs. Leo Vance looked nothing like the arrogant, polished executives his family was known to produce. He was painfully thin, wearing an oversized winter coat, and his eyes darted around the hangar with the frantic energy of a cornered animal.

When he saw Luca leaning on his mahogany crutches, Leo stopped dead in his tracks. He had been raised on terrifying stories about the ruthless, unforgiving monster of the Costello empire.

Elena didn't wait for him to approach. She walked across the tarmac, completely ignoring the freezing wind, and wrapped her arms tightly around her terrified nephew.

"You're safe now, Leo," Elena whispered fiercely, pulling back to look at his pale, exhausted face. "No one from that board will ever touch you again."

Leo blinked back tears, his voice cracking. "Aunt Elena... I didn't think you would actually come for me. My father told me you hated all of us."

"Your father told a lot of lies," Elena replied gently, guiding him out of the cold and into the hangar.

Luca stood tall, his dark eyes assessing the young man. He didn't see a corporate spy or a threat; he saw a broken kid who had been crushed by the weight of a toxic name.

"Leo," Luca said, his deep voice echoing in the cavernous space.

Leo flinched slightly, looking up at the imposing figure. "Mr. Costello. I... I don't have any money left to offer you. They froze my accounts before I fled."

Luca let out a soft, rumbling chuckle, shaking his head.

"I have enough money, kid," Luca said, a surprisingly warm smile breaking across his sharp features. "I don't want your trust fund. I want to know if you are ready to leave the Vance legacy behind and learn how to actually build something you can be proud of."

Leo stared at him, absolutely stunned by the sheer grace radiating from the man he had been taught to fear. The heavy, suffocating anxiety that had plagued him for months finally shattered.

"Yes, sir," Leo breathed, a genuine tear slipping down his cheek. "More than anything."

"Then welcome to Chicago," Luca said, gesturing toward the waiting armored SUV. "Let's get you home. Maya has been asking a thousand questions about her new cousin, and if we are late for dinner, she will hold both of us accountable."
