Chapter 16 - The First Client

The heavy oak doors of the Costello-Vance Foundation opened to the public precisely at eight o'clock the following morning. The lingering scent of fresh paint and the crisp autumn air filled the grand foyer. Elena stood near the reception desk, her heart fluttering with a mixture of nervous anticipation and profound pride. This was no longer just a concept on paper or a defiant speech; it was a physical, breathing sanctuary.
At quarter past eight, the very first client walked through the glass doors.
She was a young woman, clutching a worn leather purse tightly against her chest. Her eyes darted nervously toward the large windows as if expecting someone to drag her back out into the cold street. Two small children trailed behind her, holding tightly to the hem of her faded wool coat.
"Can I help you?" Elena asked, stepping forward with a warm, disarming smile.
"I saw the news broadcast yesterday," the woman whispered, her voice trembling. "My husband... he is a senior partner at a major law firm. He took my name off all our joint bank accounts. He told me if I ever tried to leave, his corporate lawyers would ensure I never saw my children again. I have no money. I have nowhere else to go."
Elena felt a familiar, cold ache in her chest. It was the exact same suffocating terror she had lived with for years under the shadow of the Vance family's control. She didn't hesitate.
"You are exactly where you need to be," Elena said softly, placing a gentle, reassuring hand on the woman's shoulder. "What is your name?"
"Sarah," she replied, a tear slipping down her pale cheek.
Luca emerged from his corner office, the steady, rhythmic click of his braces echoing on the marble floor. He stopped beside Elena, looking at the terrified mother and her children. His dark eyes, once feared across the city, now softened with an immense, protective warmth.

"Sarah, I am Luca Costello," he said, his voice deep and undeniably steady. "My lead attorneys are waiting in the next room. We are going to draft an emergency financial injunction and freeze his personal assets before he even finishes his morning coffee. No one is going to take your children away from you."
Sarah broke down into heavy, relieved sobs, burying her face in her hands. Elena wrapped her arms around the weeping woman and gently guided her toward a comfortable, secure private office. Looking back at Luca, Elena smiled. The empire of fear was dead, and their new empire of hope had officially begun its true work.
