Chapter 19 - The Apology

The extensive renovations began the following week. The St. Moritz operated carefully around the construction, ensuring minimal disruption to the guests.
One afternoon, while reviewing the new architectural plans for the upgraded staff breakrooms, Sienna heard a soft knock on her office door.
"Come in," she called out.
The door opened slowly, and Victoria stood in the threshold. She looked entirely different from the terrifying, imperious woman who had ruled the hotel weeks prior. She wore a simple beige suit, her posture subdued, her expression hesitant.
"Sienna," Victoria began softly. "May I have a moment?"
"Of course," Sienna replied, gesturing to the chair across from her desk. "Please, sit."
Victoria sat down, folding her hands tightly in her lap. She looked around the office, noticing the changes. The heavy, intimidating artwork had been replaced with bright, modern pieces. The space felt open and welcoming.
"I wanted to apologize," Victoria said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Sienna remained silent, allowing the older woman the space to speak.
"I spent years believing that fear was the only effective management tool," Victoria continued, her eyes focused on her hands. "I thought that if I showed any weakness, the staff would take advantage of it. I projected my own insecurities onto everyone else."
She looked up, meeting Sienna’s gaze.
"I see now what you are building," Victoria said, a tremor of genuine emotion in her voice. "You are running this hotel with a strength I never possessed. You aren't afraid of your employees. You respect them."
"Respect is a much stronger foundation than fear, Victoria," Sienna said gently.
"I know that now," Victoria nodded. "I am sorry for the pain I caused you. And I am sorry for what I did to this hotel."
Sienna looked at the woman who had caused her so much suffering. She felt no anger, no desire for retribution. Only a profound sense of closure.

"I accept your apology, Victoria," Sienna said sincerely. "The past is behind us. We are moving forward."
Victoria offered a small, grateful smile, standing up and leaving the office quietly. The ghost of her tyranny had finally been laid to rest.
