Chapter 55 - All Hands on Deck

|

The storm unleashed its full fury upon the Willow Creek valley. The rain fell in blinding, sideways sheets, turning the soil between the vineyard rows into thick, slippery mud. Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the frantic, desperate scramble of the St. Moritz and Grand Belle staff working as one unified army.

Sienna’s hands were aching, blistered from the repetitive motion of the heavy shears. She slipped in the mud, dropping to her knees, but a strong hand immediately grabbed her arm, hauling her back to her feet.

"Careful!" Julian roared over the howling wind, his face smeared with mud and rain. "We have three rows left!"

"Keep moving!" Sienna shouted back, grabbing her half-full basket and pushing forward.

Nearby, Chef Andre was directing a chain of kitchen staff, physically running the heavy, overflowing baskets of grapes up the hill to the safety of the chateau’s stone cellars. Maya was working alongside Elias, her usually pristine uniform ruined, laughing breathlessly as she tossed another cluster into the bin.

There was no hierarchy in the mud. There were no executives and subordinates. There were only people fighting side-by-side to save something they loved.

"The wind is picking up!" Marcus yelled from the top of the hill, waving a heavy flashlight. "Get the last of it and get inside! It's too dangerous!"

Sienna and Julian reached the end of the final row simultaneously. They clipped the last heavy bunches of dark grapes, tossing them into the final basket.

"That's it! We're done!" Elias hollered, blowing a loud whistle that cut through the storm. "Everybody inside!"

Sienna grabbed one side of the heavy wooden basket, and Julian grabbed the other. Together, slipping and sliding up the muddy incline, they carried the final harvest toward the heavy oak doors of the chateau’s cellar.

They practically fell through the doors as Marcus slammed them shut behind them, throwing the heavy iron deadbolt to lock out the raging storm.

Inside the cavernous, stone-walled cellar, the air was warm and smelled intensely of crushed fruit and damp earth. Dozens of staff members were slumped against the walls, exhausted, soaked to the bone, and breathing heavily.

Sienna looked around at her incredible, resilient team. She looked at Julian, who was leaning against a wooden barrel, wiping mud from his face with the back of his sleeve.

"We did it," Sienna whispered, leaning against the cold stone wall, a profound sense of awe washing over her.

A cheer erupted from the back of the cellar. It started small, then grew into a massive, echoing roar of triumph. The staff applauded, hugging each other, completely ignoring the mud and the cold. They had beaten the storm. The harvest was saved.
