Chapter 54 - The Gathering Storm

|

The atmosphere at The Grand Belle shifted instantly from joyous anticipation to frantic, desperate action. The sky darkened rapidly, an angry, swirling mass of slate-gray clouds swallowing the sun. The wind began to howl through the valley, whipping the trees and tearing at the vines.

Within two hours, a fleet of shuttle buses arrived from the city. Dozens of off-duty staff members from the St. Moritz—bellhops, housekeepers, front desk agents, and kitchen staff—poured out, wearing raincoats and boots. They hadn't been ordered to come; they had volunteered the moment Victoria explained the crisis.

Sienna stood at the edge of the vineyard, handing out shears and baskets as the staff rushed past.

"Work in pairs!" Elias shouted over the rising wind, directing the chaotic crowd. "Clip close to the stem! Don't bruise the fruit! Move fast!"

The first drops of rain began to fall, large and freezing cold, hitting the dry earth with loud, heavy splatters.

Sienna grabbed a basket and ran into the rows, working shoulder-to-shoulder with Maya and Chef Andre. Her hands were quickly covered in dirt and sticky grape juice, her tailored coat ruined, but she didn't care. She clipped the heavy bunches, tossing them into the basket with frantic urgency.

Suddenly, a sleek black town car tore up the gravel driveway, sliding slightly in the gathering mud before coming to a hard stop near the vineyard.

Sienna looked up, wiping rain from her eyes, expecting more staff.

Instead, the door opened, and Julian Thorne stepped out. He was not wearing a trench coat; he wore a thick wool sweater and heavy boots.

He didn't walk toward the chateau to seek shelter. He walked directly toward Sienna, grabbing a pair of shears from a confused bellhop.

"What are you doing here, Julian?" Sienna yelled over the sound of thunder cracking across the valley.

"Victoria told me the harvest was in jeopardy," Julian shouted back, stepping into the row beside her and expertly clipping a bunch of grapes. "If Vanguard buys this land out of bankruptcy because you lost your primary agricultural asset, my entire revenge plan is ruined. I am protecting my investment."

Sienna stared at him, stunned. The former CEO of a multi-billion dollar conglomerate was standing in the mud, freezing rain soaking his hair, harvesting grapes to save an independent hotel.

"You're holding the shears backward, Thorne," Sienna yelled, a massive, disbelieving smile breaking across her face despite the storm.

"Just pick the damn grapes, Vance!" Julian yelled back, a strange, wild grin lighting up his exhausted face.

Together, the CEO, the former rival, and the dedicated staff worked furiously as the storm broke over them.
