Chapter 37 - The Bidding War

|

Sienna was walking the overgrown grounds of The Grand Belle, discussing landscaping plans with an architect, when her phone buzzed with an urgent call from her real estate lawyer.

"Sienna, we have a massive problem," the lawyer said, panic evident in his voice. "Vanguard Group just submitted an aggressive, above-market cash offer for the two hundred acres of farmland bordering the eastern and southern edges of The Grand Belle."

Sienna stopped in her tracks, looking out at the beautiful, rolling green hills that surrounded her property.

"Julian," Sienna whispered, the realization hitting her instantly. "He wants to surround us. He wants to industrialize the perimeter to ruin the aesthetic value of the chateau."

"Exactly," the lawyer confirmed. "The current owners of the farmland are an elderly couple. They want to retire. Vanguard’s offer is incredibly high. If they sell to Vanguard, Julian can build whatever eyesore he wants right up to your property line."

"Can we counter-offer?" Sienna asked, her mind racing.

"We don't have the liquid capital to outbid a multi-billion dollar conglomerate, Sienna. Every spare dollar is tied up in the chateau’s restoration budget."

"I am not going to let Julian Thorne turn this sanctuary into an industrial park," Sienna said fiercely. "Set up a meeting with the landowners for tomorrow morning. I need to speak to them before they sign Vanguard’s contract."

The following morning, Sienna sat in the modest, cozy living room of Mr. and Mrs. Gable, the owners of the adjacent farmland.

"We love this land, Ms. Vance," Mr. Gable explained, pouring coffee. "But the Vanguard offer secures our grandchildren’s future. It is hard to say no to that kind of money."

"I understand," Sienna said gently. "But Vanguard will pave over these fields. They will destroy the ecosystem your family has nurtured for decades to build a warehouse purely out of spite."

"What can you offer us instead?" Mrs. Gable asked kindly.

"I cannot match their cash," Sienna admitted honestly. "But I can offer you a partnership. If you sell the land to the St. Moritz trust, we will keep it green. We will turn your fields into the organic gardens and vineyards that will supply The Grand Belle. Your family name will remain on the land, and we will offer you a percentage of the culinary profits in perpetuity."

The Gables looked at each other, weighing the legacy of their land against the cold corporate cash.

"We don't want to see this valley paved, Ms. Vance," Mr. Gable finally said. "Draft the partnership."
