Chapter 24 - The Vault

|

The restoration of the hidden speakeasy became the most fiercely guarded secret in the city. Sienna code-named the project "The Vault." Only a select group of trusted staff members were allowed into the sub-basement, working tirelessly after hours to bring the 1920s masterpiece back to its former glory.

Sienna was adamant about preserving the historical integrity of the room. They polished the original brass, carefully restored the faded velvet seating, and painstakingly cataloged the hundreds of vintage wine and spirit bottles left behind in the racks.

One evening, while Sienna was polishing the antique glass mirrors behind the bar, she heard the heavy steel door creak open. She turned around to see Victoria walking into the room, holding a thick, leather-bound ledger.

"I heard rumors that you found something interesting in the basement," Victoria said, looking around the breathtaking, warmly lit room with genuine awe. "It is magnificent, Sienna."

"Thank you," Sienna replied, setting down her polishing cloth. "It took a lot of late nights, but the staff really poured their hearts into it."

Victoria walked over to the bar and placed the heavy leather ledger on the polished brass surface.

"When your father passed away, I packed up his personal office," Victoria explained, her voice soft and reflective. "I kept this, though I never really knew why. It’s his original inventory ledger from the 1980s, detailing his private contacts with independent vineyards across Europe. The ones that don't sell to commercial distributors."

Sienna looked at the ledger, touched by the unexpected gesture.

"Vanguard has cornered the market on the major liquor distributors," Victoria continued, meeting Sienna’s eyes. "If you want this speakeasy to be truly exclusive, you need to offer a menu that Julian Thorne literally cannot buy. These contacts will give you access to vintages that haven't been seen in the city for thirty years."

Sienna carefully opened the ledger, tracing her father’s elegant handwriting. It was the missing piece of the puzzle. It was the exact advantage she needed to completely outmaneuver her rival.

"Why are you giving this to me, Victoria?" Sienna asked quietly.

"Because I spent my entire marriage trying to erase your father's legacy to build my own," Victoria admitted, a profound sadness in her eyes. "I realize now that the legacy of this hotel belongs to both of you. I want to help you protect it."

"Thank you, Victoria," Sienna said, offering a warm, genuine smile. "This changes everything."

The two women stood together in the softly lit speakeasy, the ghosts of their bitter past finally laid to rest. They were no longer enemies; they were the guardians of the St. Moritz.
