Chapter 6: Beneath the Surface

By Monday morning, Sienna’s new operational mandate was in full effect. While the legal team finalized the administrative restructuring, Sienna spent her days where she felt most comfortable: on the ground floors of the hotel.

She walked through the cavernous basement kitchens, where industrial dishwashers hummed and chefs prepared breakfast for five hundred guests. She visited the laundry facilities in the sub-basement, where heavy machinery processed tons of white linen daily under high heat.

Accompanying her was Officer Wright, who had been promoted to Director of Hotel Safety, and Maya, the junior housekeeper Sienna had saved from the falling crate the week before.

"The working conditions down here haven't been updated in six years, Miss Mercer," Maya explained gently as they walked through the narrow, dim corridor near the staff lockers. "The previous management cut the maintenance budget for the ventilation system to fund the lobby renovations."

Sienna reached up and touched the dusty air intake vent above her head. The air was thick, humid, and warm—a stark contrast to the crisp, climate-controlled luxury of the lobby three floors above.

"Who approved the delay on ventilation repairs?" Sienna asked Wright.

"The facility expenditure reports were signed off directly by Victoria Sterling's office," Wright reported, holding a digital tablet. "She designated the basement repairs as 'non-essential low-priority items' for three consecutive quarters."

Sienna’s jaw set tightly. "Issue an immediate work order for a complete HVAC overhaul for the entire basement and kitchen facilities. Use the executive discretionary fund. Work starts tonight."

As they stepped back toward the service elevator, a sudden noise caught their attention—a heated argument coming from the laundry sorting room.
